HOFFMANN, Richard
German, 20th Century, male. Born 1930, in Lebach (Saarland). Painter, sculptor.

Hoffmann studied at the school of art and crafts in Saarbrücken from 1949 until 1954.
He held a scholarship at the Academie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris in 1954-1955,
followed by a scholarship at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1955-1956 and then the College
of fine arts in Berlin from 1957 until 1962.

From 1963 until 1983 Hoffmann created sculptures in bronze and synthetic stone for
public places in various towns in the Saar region; among these was the 1976 peace
memorial and altar for Tholey. After 1983, he once again devoted a large part of his
time to painting. He was fascinated by the natural worid and animals. His paintings,
like his sculptures, are evocative of visceral masses, äs though he is attempting to
reconstruct indeterminate bodies or parts of the human body.

Hoffmann took part in collective exhibitions in Germany and other countries from
1951. He participated in an international Symposium of sculpture in Homburg in the
Saar area in 1973, but did not take part in any public exhibitions after 1974.
